This one lived a good life. Due to 'hard economic times', people have extra time to 'clean house' and I think this is a victim of change.

I am not aware of any Great River Road caches in Missouri at this time. Perhaps on the IL. side of the river?

About a month ago, I went hunting for a place to spend a long weekend, and grab a few caches. I checked out areas within a 5 hour drive from Louisville. I pulled a lot of PQ’s and studied them for interesting spots. When I saw the caches along Grant’s Trail, I knew I had found our spot. We just love caching on bikes, so our decision was made. Last weekend we packed up the bikes and headed to St. Louis. While it was nice and toasty (ok it was downright HOT!!!), we had a great time. Grant’s Trail was awesome, we went 48 for 48 on hunting the caches along the trail, but we earned every smiley. There were too many clever caches to start mentioning them by name, but I could tell that the hiders in the area take great pride in their cache placements and containers. Other than Grant’s Trail, we tried to hit the major parks in the area, as well as many of the smaller parks. I am amazed to say that out of the 130+ caches we found, I can’t remember finding 1 light pole or guardrail cache. I’m not opposed to hunting LP’s or GR’s, but they don’t really take a lot of imagination to hunt or hide. I just think that is a great testament to the cache hiders in the area.

So, I just want to take this time to thank all of the local cachers for doing such a fine job. I will definitely recommend St. Louis to anyone who really enjoys caching for what it was meant to be. There are other places where you can find MORE caches, but I haven’t seen a place where you could hunt BETTER caches....and I’ll take QUALITY over QUANTITY every time.

Thanks,
SherpaRon & Li’l AL

:-) Ahhh, the good 'old days when strapping an ammo can to a train trestle was not given a second thought by anyone. Good fun back then. :-)

The SLAGA group is much larger than when this local page started, the KC and Springfield groups are really busy and activity is growing in the rest of the state too. We've come a long way.

I am one of those 88.

Never know when you might need to make a note for 87 to see.

I only have a few micro's.
The rest are still mostly a hike.

Yesterday I put a personal watch on this cache. I didn't know it was active anymore, but I see that there are 88 people watching it!

I remember when this was all we had to post notes back and forth to each other. There was no Freelist Geocaching Newsgroup, no SLAGA web site, no Friday lunches, no group hunts, no MOGA, no www.mogeo.com (and micros were non-existent).

With the recent confusion over the zoo, maybe it would be a good idea for the cache owners of caches in the zoo to mention that it is free to visit the zoo. Just my thought.

Hello SLAGA

I just dropped off a TB (50 Summits) in Forest Park Forever (GCW5V4). It needs to go to Taum Sauk Mt in the Ozarks while in MO (and all neighboring state mt peaks) - anybody up for the challenge? I just brought it with me from Mt Whitney...

PS. Sorry for not logging my finds for a few days but I have a hectic schedule while I'm here...

Hello,

I'll be in the area in a few weeks (a very short stay) and I was thinking about caching in Forest Park. However, I noticed that a few caches seem to be inside the zoo, and I'm not about to pay zoo admission to go caching. It would be highly appreciated if anybody could give me the names of all caches that are in the zoo area, including puzzles and multis - that way I can exclude them.

Thanx!

Hello to all,

My family(me,wife, son, and in-laws) will be in the area from tues. 7-17 through sat. 7-21(leaving early).

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on "MUST DO" caches in the area?? I have about 20 listed around the convention center and see Forest Park has 16 active.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm flying in from Wichita, Kansas, to teach geocaching at a surveying convention in St. Louis.

Is anyone in the St. Louis area available for geocaching talk? I'm married with kids, so no ulterior motives.

I'll be in St.L Sunday afternoon, give my lecture Monday morning, and head back out on Tuesday.

Steinie and I in town for a business meeting. Business all done time for some caching. :)

You don't have to log a find to get it off the radar. Just hit ignore. :) You can still have it on the watch list.

Thanks for the great caches while we were visiting. I have come to love your great city from the zoo to the art museum to the downtown area.

I'm only marking this as a find so that I can have a reference point when i'm in st. louis. I technically found it on my palm when i was on the airplane so this is more of a discovery than a "find" but I really like the idea and have been reading the former logs as i was ready to cache here in st. louis. Thanks for this cache.

Hi, we are planning on a day trip to St. Louis to see the zoo and I am looking for a list of caches that do not require much walking or climbing. My father, "Old", would like to actually cache and not just sit it the car. He uses a cane and has had to resort to a motorized scooter the last few weeks. If anyone can e-mail me with some caches that you think he might be able to do, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Judging by your screen name, I would guess that you work for the State of Texas? Perhaps between now and august, we can get some caches out in your area..

I have never cached in San Antonio. However, I worked there for quite a while when I lived in Katy. One heck of a haul each way but was worth it. I love that town!

Going to be visiting from San Antonio for a week. Sure wish cachers around Dog Town, The Hill, and the Maplewood area would get active and place more caches in these areas. How did "FRANZ PARK" and the "SOFTBALL FIELDS at McCAUSLAND & ARSENAL" escape at LEAST a micro I'm flying to STL tomorrow and staying thru the 15th. We are returning in August again for a couple of weeks. Thanks for reading this far. You are welcome to San Antonio anytime.

OK, so I've got this really cool new GPSr. My old one was pretty basic, the new one has a mini-USB port and all the great bells and whistles.

I'm trying to figure out how to download waypoints. I can't seem to get them to my PC in either .loc or .gpx format. I select them at the waypoint search page of geocaching.com and press the download button, but I can't determine that the file(s) are actually going anywhere. A search of my hard drive reveals nothing.

What am I missing? I've installed EasyGPS. Help.

Since the location of this ST. LOUIS info portal has actually been in St. Charles for far too long, I move it into Forest Park. When out-of-towners and new local cachers search on St. Louis, they will easily find this St. Louis and SLAGA info page. I am supprised just how many folks continue to contact me about geocaching in STL because they saw this page and had someone they felt they could contact.

It should no longer be a bother to the St. Charles folks.

I just received this note . Are any cachers heading east who could carry this TB a distance?

From: Pur24karet@peoplepc.com

--This message was sent through the Geocaching.com web site--

I guess this is sort of an odd request. I am writing about the TB (Scott the Space Shuttle)in your Slices of Quince letterbox. I was wondering if by any chance you knew anyone in your area or had a forum where you could post locally to other cachers, to see if someone were headed towards Tennesse or North Carolina anytime soon and could move the bug. The bug is headed to my boss and close personal friend of mine. He has a birthday on the 24 and he is leaving his job here on the 27th. I would love to be able to present the TB to him as a surprise. I would be willing to drive pretty far to get the bug but it's still not close enough for me to get it. If you do have a local forum to post a note or just know some fellow cachers who might be heading this way could you let them know. I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Kim

I was at Radio Shack in Eureka today. After picking out some wire, one of the workers noticed my Garmin t-shirt and joked that they should hire me just to walk around the store (the store is selling the latest Garmin products).

As I was paying for the wire, he asked me if I knew anything about geocaching. I said, 'yes'. He said, 'Don't they have one in Fenton somewhere?' I said, 'They have them all over the world'. I then gave him the URL for geostl.com.

I could tell the entire time he wasn't that interested in the hobby - just participating in idle conversation with one of his customers. But I can't help wonder where he heard about a cache in Fenton.

In case you are wondering, there are 2 new events on June 5th. The first is Tiger Day at Beaumont Reservation where we will showcase Geocaching to young cubs and their families.

The second event is in Augusta at the new Klondike park. St. Charles County Parks has asked us to participate in the National Trails Day out at the park. I should get more details as time goes on about what SLAGA will do. I know we will have to have a couple of caches hidden for the Adults along the trail system and have some easy kids caches as well as some handouts and games.

Please look at the cache pages and signup.. We need volunteers!

Thanks!

This is off of the subject, but while there is a lot of activity from the group i thought i would put it out there. Upon searching for geocoins i noticed that there were none for Missouri, that i could find. So I was planning on minting some numbered geocoins for Missouri. The coins would be made of the same material the new U.S. Dollar coin is made of (commercial bronze), so it would shine and have some weight to it. I was putting this out there to find out if there was enough demand for them because i can get them cheaper in bulk so then i can pass on the savings. I just wanted a really neat trading coin for the greatest state in the union and i wanted them to be cheap enough that everyone could not only have some to trade, but have one to keep on display at home or work. If anyone wants to see some preliminary designs feel free to email me at afisher@rinker.com. If this sounds like a good idea then simply log back on here and tell me what you think.

Be verwy verwy quite - We are hunting wabbits!

I’ve been an avid hunter for about 25 years and a Geocacher for about 6 months, and now that hunting season is here, I started thinking that caching and hunting don’t mix very well. I’m not saying that cachers are the problem, rather, I know that there are some really dangerous weekend warriors armed with high-powered rifles in the woods this time of year. MDC is putting the push on getting rid of a lot of deer, which will draw even more hunters to the woods.

Probably everyone knows this, but wear bright colors in the woods, stay away from wearing brown. Announce your presence with a whistle, I occasionally do a lousy quail or cardinal imitation as I’m walking. Hunters appreciate this and will usually respond in kind to announce their location. Be extra careful during sunrise and sunset. Gun season is November 1&2, 15-25, December 13-21. Be aware of special hunts in certain areas. Here’s a link to those dates: (visit link)

I have a technical question:

Have regular cachers noticed more frequent lost-of-signal in the last 6 weeks? My GPS is taking much longer to sync up lately and the signals are weaker than 2-4 months ago.

I'm wondering if my MAP-330 is gettting "tired".

I had planned on meeting with the City of Ballwin before I placed some caches in the local parks. Recently, GC-Cacher has placed some caches in a few of Ballwin parks. (I haven't done them - but they look like good ones)

Tonight I met with the Director of Parks and Recreation with the City of Ballwin. She wasn't aware of the existing caches, but she is excited about Geocaching and said that it sounds like a lot of fun. I'm going to do a cache with her in the near future. We also discussed a possible geocaching class in the future.

$piritwing;

That's great that you've got a meeting setup and he's willing to talk about geocaching. I'd be glad to join you on Wednesday if you want another warm body, but if you want to handle it yourself, that's OK too.

Keep your eyes open in the Olivette (63132) area. I have a meeting with the City Manager on Wednesday morning to discuss the possibility of placing caches in Olivette City Parks.
The meeting is at 10 am at City Hall on Olive west of Dielman if anyone else would like to meet with him as well.
He has never heard of Geocaching and is very interested in the idea of high-tech. treasure hunting in his municipality. Very open to the discussion.
I am going to offer to volunteer as the liason between His municipality and Geocaching.com

This is a good place as any to post the picts. I was more than a few feet off at that location also. I think that is the standard two Magellans off distance. :) I had a heck of a time maintaining a lock in that area of the park too.

Nice picts.

King B,

Glad that you had a good time in St. Louis. Wish the tournament turned out better but as you said, there is no shame in giving it your best shot.

Glad that you got out to some of the local STL caches too and to one of mine at Faust Park. I have often thought about archiving it because everyone has found it but then there is always all the new people and the out of town folks that really seem to like their visit there.

Come on back any time,

Hey JB
I've never actually seen the Sat's get turned down, or off. More than likely your GPS just needs a good restart. If you have traveled a great distance since last using the GPS it can take quite sometime to figure out where it is. I'd just set it out somewhere with a clear view of the sky for an hour, see if that works. What kind of unit is it ?

Since this morning (2/19/03) when I powered up my GPS, it has been unable to lock on to a signal. Has anyone else experienced a similiar problem - like no signal? I was wondering if the goverment has turned down the GPS signals because they wiil be soon using all the energy to guide falling bombs over Iraq.

B2K - BruceS finds his 2000th cache.
You're welcome to hike along (it's five miles or so), or just meet up after the big event to celebrate.
We will be hiking to the Pioneer Cache. (visit link)

This date is tentative at this time dependent on BruceS finding another 100+ before then, however if the weather cooperates he should be able to get that done easily. March 1st represents 18 months to the day from Bruces' first cache find, The Mexican, 9/1/2001.

We hope that many cachers will be able to make this event.

If there is any interest in going down the day before to camp and be ready for the start of the hike early, that may be possible too.

I have a question about military coordinates, like 15S YN 01118 86354, which are used in Private Snuffy's Box. I know I can use my GPS to convert from military to WGS83, but I would like to understand the meaning of the numbers. Is there a website that I checkout?

GREAT work from RGS....
-------------------------------------
I just wanted to bring everyone up to speed concerning my interaction with the County parks.

Today, at their request, I presented a PowerPoint show at Geeensfelder Nature Center on the how's and why's of a GPS. There were about 26 attendees with a mix of park rangers and maintenance people. Some had their own GPS's, others didn't, and some had never seen or used a GPS. I did a high level overview on satellites, how they transmit, how the receiver works, GPS screens, etc. Once I got into the slides that talked about waypoints and tracks, and how the parks can use that info, that woke everyone up. I had previously made a track of the road through the park and superimposed that over satellite and topo maps with ExpertGPS. Everyone could relate to what I was talking about then. Another point I brought up was walking an existing trail (or a planned trail) using the track option, and then that could be overlaid on to a topo or satellite view to create quick and cheap trailmaps for handouts. I also explained how waypoints could be placed on the maps and then D/L'd to the GPS without even going outside to physically mark the WP. We talked about waypoint management (EasyGPS and ExpertGPS) that could be traded with different parks and personnel.

snips ...

I had made handouts of the 20 slides so everyone had something to take back for reference. They may want another session like this one for some that couldn't make it. The next scheduled session will be the middle of Jan. and they want that to be a hands on, out in the woods, session. This will give them a real feel of using the GPS and how the surroundings effect the satellites and accuracy. The final session (date ?) will be on reading topo maps and UTM in conjunction with a GPS. Interest on this session may not be as great.

During the break there was a lot of discussion on other ways to use the GPS within the parks system, such as marking/verifying boundaries, trail maintenance and placement of signs, verifying trail distances, etc. I obviously mentioned SLAGA and Geocaching and some had heard of it and even looked for caches. Others had not heard of it but EVERYONE thought that it was a great idea for the parks and see no problem with caches being placed.

I mentioned Greensfelder had 6, W. Tyson had 4 or 5, and Lone Elk had 5. Several of the rangers used GC.COM to follow the logs on caches in their parks. I mentioned if there were any areas in the parks that we should not have caches or they need to be moved, contact out group and we will contact the owner. Naturally there was one area in question, Jedburgh-Glencoe. My two Aggets caches! He keeps track of the logs on those caches and problems with the locals, mainly from Jedburgh. He explained that there ARE illegal activities (meth labs) in the area and was concerned about our safety. I told him where my caches are and that is County Park property but he said to NOT vary from the trail into the woods on the Jedburgh end.

Then another ranger though it would be a good idea for the parks to put on a geocaching presentation for the public. I told him that we were (SLAGA) going to do that and everything was set up for April 5th for the whole day. That made us look proactive! So then I threw out the idea of the County Parks getting involved with placing their own caches (Like Whitecliff, Cleveland Metroparks, and Warner Parks in Nashville). They thought it was a great idea and want to talk about that in the early Spring. They would be stocked with Park propaganda and freebies, free swimming passes, etc.

I think this is a great step for SLAGA to get our name and the sport out in public view, especially with the County Parks behind us.

------------------------------------------

Financial Issues

A week ago, I asked for feedback on the SLAGA geocaching newsgroup about how we should finance the picnic. One person responded. I am somewhat disappointed, since we have 70 members. I know that membership doesn't come with any responsibility, except what ever you want to bring to the group to make it better.

There was much discussion in the picnic committee about charging $5/family, but because we couldn't make a decision, there won't be a fee. This time.

Luckily, based on the level of donation money on the SLAGA ledger, we don't
need to charge an attendance fee. This is mostly because of a recent and very
generous donation from one of our members.

However, because of the cost of the park shelter, meat and prizes for this picnic, any future SLAGA-sponsored event will require more donations or an attendance fee. (Feel free to talk about this issue with me or others at the picnic.)

Our treasurer, Island-Dave will gladly accept donations before, during and after the picnic.

I'll see you there.

SLAGA's Rolla Cache Trip Report
(visit link)

Sunday at 7am, Ms E. and konopapw met RGS at the designated meeting place. We left at 7:15am and headed for Rolla to meet thunder_monk at the Steak & Shake. thunder_monk had just placed two new rest area caches and we gave them the stress test.

We first did his new Kid's Rest Cache - then ventured toward Big Hole (aka 'big sink hole'). On the way, we got a history lesson from thunder_monk about the trains that used to bring tourists from St. Louis to visit the two artesian wells in the area.

We had just logged the Big Hole cache when all of a sudden wow4mom and Tyler appeared! They joined us for the rest of the cache hunts.

Next we drove the windy roads through Dixon to Clifty Creek parking area. Nice and slow walk on the creek bed to the natural bridge. At that point, you could feel the anticipation in every step that thunder_monk took, since he was driven to find the cache that had eluded him many months before. Because I had already hunted this cache, I just tagged along, trying not to give away the hiding spot.

On our way back to Rolla, we did thunder_monk's other rest cache, Kid's Rest Cache II. We bid ado to thunder_monk, gassed up and headed to Slabtown. After an unplanned tour of the Slabtown area, we found the launch point for the Slabtown Cave cache. Walking through the field presented the hottest part of the day, but it wasn't a long walk.

After carefully navigating the 'goat trail', the cache was found and we explored the cave a bit, especially the handywork of the ant-lion.

Since it was on our way home, we stopped at Rockadoodledoo. I had done this weeks ago; RGS had done it a couple of days prior. This cache has a habit of getting wet and we're not sure why.

After we got back to car, we detoured to see the spring. Tyler had found a very small snake caught in a spider web and we watched it for awhile.

The sun was going down and it was time to head for home.

Thanks to RGS for letting me be the shutterbug on this trip. Thanks to wow4mom and Tyler for catching up with us and putting up with all the dust we created on the dirt roads. And thanks to Ms E. for tolerating my spur-of-the-
moment decisions to go caching all day long!

(Respectfully submitted by konopapw)

Some of you may know or have heard of the prolific geocacher from the midwest - BruceS. He is nearing his 1,000th geocaching find. His goal is to reach that mark within 333 days since he started hunting caches last September. He is currently only 24 finds away!

BruceS has graciously allowed us to tag along with him on his 1,000th find. He has tentatively chosen July 28th (Sunday) as the day and Onondaga S.P. as the cache (The state park is SW of St. Louis on highway 44).

These plans may change, so if you'd like to join us for the celebration, as well as meet other geocachers from the St. Louis area, keep up to date with the latest information at: (visit link)

Had a real good time in the St Louis Area and also Central IL. I grew up in Altamont IL and spent a few days over there visiting the old farm and family. Scored 18 of 20 for the entire trip. Really enjoyed the ones at the zoo and Forest Park. I had never visited a metro zoo before so that was a treat and a great way to check it out. I am thinking of doing something like it in our zoo in KC. Thanks for the good hunting. Just wanted to let you know that the folks in KC are around and kicking.

GEOSTL Volunteer Day at Habitat for Humanity St. Louis hosted by Barramus.

Here is a little background on Habitat for Humanity.

HFH is all about giving people a hand up, not a hand out.

HFH rehabs and builds houses for low income familys' that meet certain critera.

The new homeowner's must contribute 350 hours of sweat equity before they obtain the keys to their home. The homes aren't given to the homeowner however. There is a small mortgage for the cost of the home financed at 0 % for 20 years. That money is used to help build more houses.

HFHSTL is currently building 4 homes. They will start 4 more in mid July, and another 4 in mid August. All homes should be finished by the end of the year.

What I am asking you for is a day of your life to help build a home for someone who can't afford to buy one on the open market. You don't need to know anything about construction as there will be a crew leader to train you on your task for the day. There are normally about 25 volunteers per house per day, plus leaders. Workdays for normal volunteers are Saturdays. If you sign up, you will be expected to help for the whole day, 8:00 to 3:30. Lunch is usually provided by the house sponsor.

There is currently a need for volunteers on August 17th and August 24th. Also later dates are open but these are the first openings. I would like to 1st get an idea of who is interested in this. And then we will determine which date to use. It's possible by the time it takes us to pick a day that that day will have already been filled. So time is of the essence here.

I was hoping to get a cache page setup to advertise this but the admins at geocaching.com wouldn't allow this to be listed as an event cache. So I'll get the word out other ways.

If interested, please email me direct at barramus@att.net

Hi HB. ,
Yep, I have seen these I have even found a few before the official page was up. There is a cache someplace that folks were logging their finds on a while back. I thought they did count someplace but in a separate category. I haven’t looked into it very deeply. Sounds like a bunch of new things to go look for. They really are all over the place. Many months ago, I say a site that was for the logging of previously lost markers. the ones that haven’t been found in years. Working off the very old survey descriptions, folks were able to track some of these down. Problem is, many of the old landmarks have long since been removed, fences gone, roads have changed ect. sounded like a real hunt. since i have rund out of close caches to find i may start on benchmarks, and yellow jeeps :-)

There seems to be a new Geogame site in town. There is only one local cache listed. If you have been to Eddies Money and want to log it on www.geogamer.com you can. I am not sure for the life of me why you would want to, and i am POSITIVE NO ONE will play their game site to Earn Points to trade in for their stuff but. You can find stuff and log for free so, what the heck .. i guess. you will need this info to log..
GEOGAMER ID 4706, Direction N

Glenn,

waiting to see how fast this new site goes down the tubes. Remember NavaCache? It never did take off like expected.

I got that hack from one of the forums and am vaguely familiar with HTML code. I logged on this morning and downloaded all three of your sites and 2 of Island Dave's also. Same computer, same programs, same connection. Go figure. I agree they do look pretty sharp with the modified backgrounds. Just gremlins in the machine I guess. Thanks for your response and we will try to capture Jake before Saturday, HikerBob

Late report from the 3rd Floating & Camping Extravaganza: I don’t think we could have picked a better W/E. Everything was great, the food the floaters and the campers couldn’t have been any better. The Floating portion of the program started about noonish and everybody made it down the river and finally checked in. Most of us landed about 5:30pm on the beach at Saranac Springs. Some of us landed just a little harder than others tho, & I am not saying who. The Drifter got sidetracked and finally paddled in about 7:15PM. Barammus and Lucky Leonard took off for home about 18:15 after a full day.

Earl & Lannis arrived about 19:30. We told stories and goofed off ‘till around midnight+ . What on earth could we talk about that long? Hmmm, lets see a partial list of topics include but are not limited to; The use of multi-spectral (under) ground imaging radar, various uses of ultra-low frequency radio communications, the technicalities of constructing campsite saunas and hot tubs, and how to drain a lake and fill said hot tub at the same time, the requirements of good cave mapping computer programs, hot to make a campfire using just $5,000 worth of wood, 40gal of diesel fuel and a dozen or so gallons of gasoline, (a really good campfire is one that can be seen from outer space), which led to various igniting systems, including an optical laser-actuated trigging devices… that was just to get us started. I am quite sure that if we hadn’t fallen asleep or had to leave on Sunday, we would still be talking!!

Between the whooping of the partiers at one end of the campground staying up ‘till 0200 and the primitive campsite rendezvous (sp?) folks at the other end of camp shooting off their black powder canons at 0600, I didn’t get much sleep Friday night. Then all day on the river then another late night Saturday made for a long day. , I think we had a splendid time and I am still beat and cant wait to go again.

Keep your eyes peeled for “The Camping and Floating Extravanganza #4” coming to a river near you soon.

There's been a major overhaul, so things will definately look different that before. We still have to add some more content, decide on the color scheme, and add some graphics. Sometimes I get songs in my head and it wont go away. About 3pm, Tina
Turner's version of Proud Mary was rattling around. You know, the part
where she says Some like it easy...... and some like it rough then
proceeds on with a easy and rough rendition of the tune.

I went for a walk today. It was a nice walk. A walk with lots of trail
and lots of choices, some of each were easy & some of each were rough.

What kind of choices could ya possibly have on a walk you ask? Well, the
usual, like Do I walk fast or slow? (easy) Do I walk High or low? (not so
easy). Do I go that way? I think I'd be up a creek with out a paddle. OR is
that the way I am supposed to go ... or maybe not (hard). Did I walk too far
and miss a landmark? (very hard) Now what? Go back, continue on, bail to the
left and find the road?? (hardest yet)

You see, just like life, taking a little walk with me ends up being a basket
full of questions and choices.

I liked this walk today, so much I shall share it with you. Share it now
while It's hot out, or later when it's colder. Hmmmm, It IS a mighty fine
walk. For those that know of my walks and chose to think this will be yet
another walk in the park, that may be your 1st poor choice.

Just how hard is it..... Depends.
I walked it in boots and shorts, I know that others could do this in
sneekers.
It rated a 3 on the tick scale...
In Colorado it would be rated perhaps a 2 star.
Walking UP the hill from the Toll Gate to Wildcat Mtn would be harder I
think.
And remember, I walked it.... How hard could it possibly be.... ?

I will let ya'll tell me.
Right now I have a track log and a few waypoints marked in case I got lost.
When I figure out what to do with this, you will be the 1st to know :) (evil
grin)

Bingo, RGS is correct again. Absolutely NO significance to the location except for the fact that it was in a location that i thought nobody would actually go look and it was near my house. Sorry about that. Perhaps I shall clarify the cache page again with a def. Of “not findable” to mean it is not findable and do not hunt this cache, or something. Maybe, as a “newbe” so to speak, you could help me clarify the language a bit. What is clear to one person is often as clear as mud to others. The nearest caches idea is exactly right also. I have since moved the cache to a different part of town so it will show up on other peoples list near the top also. I also moved another one of my caches into town as i didn’t think anyone was even seeing it at its correct location.

I do not recall the name DUPONT. A quick scan thru the forums may turn up something.

Garabaldi84,

In response to your question about the coordinates of THE LOCAL NEWS and not being a 'findable' cache, they are just 'place holders'. All cache pages must have coordinates and the idea behind the ones Glenn picked was to have the page display when someone in the St. Louis area looks for nearby caches. He could have used the coordinates of the White House, but you would never see it on your cache list when you did a search. Normally, the middle of a highway wouldn't be a safe cache location, real or virtual, except for 'Yes He Would'. I think Glenn lived near that area so he picked there; it could have been HW 270 and 70, Interbelt and Page, just anywhere in the St. Louis area.
I'm sure Glenn can give you more details.

Everyone but Glenn can go this weekend. I was hoping he'd make the trip so I could hike slow with him. Sure you can't make it ?
So we have, in no particulat order, konopapw, rgs, island dave, myotis, myself, and maybe schape
Anyone else in for Saturday ? I was originally thinking to make this a one day trip. I know I'll be exhausted by the end of the hike but 2 folks have volunteered to drive me home while I sleep in the back seat.
We should hit the trail early, probably by 9:00. So we'll have to figure on a place and time to meet. Anyone know the trail route ? I'm sure rgs will have a 2' by 3' topo printed for us.

Denali, did anything ever happen after you caught CooperAgency logging virtual caches without going to the site? That is clearly cheating. I think doing stuff like that is discusting. If someone did that on one of my caches, I would delete the entry. For my Covered Bridge Cache (visit link) I got this message today:

User Show Me the Cache has contacted you with the following message:

On the Switzer Covered Bridge across the Elkhorn Creek, are you referring to the 1855 built date?

They guessed wrong. I figured someone could come up with when the bridge was built without going there, so I used something else.

A couple suggestions to prevent raised suspicions on caches are to use clear containers and also not place them near areas that could be identified as targets for bombs, ie dams, highway bridges, etc. An ammo can placed at the base of the arch will cause a bomb squad to show up and clear container would get removed but not get blown up. Ammo cans are acceptable (maybe preferred) containers in the woods.

I've been afraid of this happening for a while now. We need to take it upon ourselves to do whatever we can to prevent this from happening here. All I can think of at this point is to clearly label the cache container. Although in this instance I think they knew what it was and decided to blow it up anyway because of questionable contents. I've heard of this happening in Vegas too. I'll be taking some labels out to my older caches soon. Anyone have any other suggestions? I can see this being the demise of our sport. That's real unfortunate too.

This cache is gone!! Up in smoke !!! Literally, This cache was destroyed by the State Fire Marshall's Office Bomb Squad. It was found in it's proper location by a non-geocacher and reported as a suspicous item. It was reported to police and then things got interesting. It was x-rayed, examined by a robot, and because of some questionable items, it was destroyed in it's best interest. Not much left to salvage, just a hole in the ground and some shardes of shattered plastic toys.

It was fun while it lasted, thanks to all who visited this cache.

Actually, the new parking lot has been there since at least last year. Not many people know about it - so its usually vacant. The parking lot is closed at night.

I understand the goal of the parks people is to establish a greenway along the Meramec, beginning at the Mississippi and extending all the way to Meramec State Park.

I have heard stories of conflicts between the land owners and others. While walking the trail last weekend, I noticed a lot of spikes - metal poles sticking up a few inches on the gravel trail - I guess to cause havoc with motorized vehicles. Fortunately, no fishing hooks on the trails.

Someone left a nice long rapelling rope up on the cliff though. I guess they left it there for future use. I sure had my eyeballs on it - but honesty prevailed.

I made a 180 degree IPIX image from on top of the Aggets Deux cliff - download will be available soon.

Glencoe, Aggets, and Sherman/Jedburg update...

Island Dave mentioned in the Aggets log that he parked in the new lot near the RR tressle in Sherman. I went there yesterday and it is a gravel road leading to a 10? car parking lot, right at the Meramec river.

I called and talked to Jerry at the St. Louis County Parks and he is the planner for that area along the Meramec. He said that parking area, now known as Sherman Beach Park, will be a connector between Castlewood Park and Glencoe. They will start this spring with the trails back to Castlewood. The next phase is a parking area in Glencoe, just past the mini RR. The abandoned RR actually goes all the way to HW44, which makes a great hike/bike ride. Unfortunately the state only owns the right of way to Glencoe at the creek, but they are in processes of purchasing the rest of the land. The area is definately open to the public from Castlewood to Glencoe but no ATV's motorcycles, or vehicles.

I mentioned that several friends have had 'meetings' with the police at Glencoe and were told it's was private property. He said that there have been 'illegal activities' along the trail but wouldn't elaborate. He said those problems have been resolved. He did mention, though, that there were some unfriendly locals in Sherman and have torn down park signs and posts in order to drive along the river. They (the locals), have gone as far as putting string across 'their' trails with fishhooks tied to the string. Hopefully this has been resolved!

Friday - Drive to KC area get there just before noon. 13 finds. After dark find out all the public campgrounds are closed because of storm damage. Go pitch tent at KOA
Saturday - 27 finds 1 no find. Camp with a troop of Boy Scouts at a nature center
Sunday - 26 finds 1 no find, celebrate number 400 by staying in hotel instead of tent
Monday - 16 finds. Leave KC before 12:30 so I can honey do done by 5.

It was a great weekend. It is unbelievable the amount of storm damage in the KC area. They will be doing clean up for a very long time.

Those of you who were at the Mark Twain National Forest public meeting at Power Valley will probably find this more interesting than the rest.
----------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
2/17/2002
Metro Sunday, Section C
DRILLING FOR LEAD IN MARK TWAIN NATIONAL FOREST

Summary: Many people in dying towns that used to be propped up by lead mining encourage giving the Doe Run company rights to drill for lead in the Mark Twain National Forest. Those who live in areas where the drilling will be literally in their back hard do not welcome it. Seems likely that the current U.S. administration will allow it to happen. Protestors to try to gain support through public education of existing contamination (lead, cadmium, arsenic) of hundreds of acres by Doe Run company.

So, be careful where you place you next geocache in the Mark Twain National Forest. You don't want a drill going through it or a bulldozer flattening it.

End of a long day. The pretzel supply has been restocked and it is finally time for bed.

I want to thank Denali for the 'Official Donut Cache' he placed in the parking lot of the Lewis & Clark Trail. It turned into a moving cache and was finally pillaged by the St. Louis Geocachers Association on the way to Corporal Snuffy's Box cache.

On July 2, 2001, Hikerbob was the first person to log one of my caches (Emmerick). As of now, 496 finds have been logged on my caches. So the big 500th find is very close. Perhaps, some more finds will come in today or you could still have the chance to be the 500th find.

9:00 at the trail sounds good to me.
Who do we have this week ?
Barramus, Konopapw and Elaine ?, RGS, Glenn and Joann are in I think.
Myotis is out.
What about Island Dave ? Is Lannis still resting the knee ? Drifter ?
Everyone else is welcome to.
I'll be the den mother this week for sandwiches, just give me a head count.

I talked to Mean Gene this week. He is going to organize a 1 day geo-binge ! We are thinking of starting in Collinsville and seeing how many we can do in a day. Ya all are welcome on this one too. We haven't yet picked a day but are leaning towards a weekday.

PS, about the spring, I can go see it anyime. I just wanted to know where it is.

I'm uploading an image for the 'Lewis & Clark Four'. This might be considered a spoiler for some, so beware. I couldn't send this to the geocaching@freelists.org news group because that application rejects image attachments.

Should we meet at the trailhead on Sat at 9am? I'm looking for suggestions on order of attack. From reading the logs of the Weldon Spring Cache, seems that it's just a one-parter. I think we have people interested in seeing the actual spring, so work that into the plan, somehow.

Dave Murray says possible rain Friday morning; High of about 50 degrees on Saturday. I plan on driving. Elaine is coming along.

Barry,

A nice guy would scan the manual into Word, create a PDF file, then put it on the LOCAL NEWS for all of us to download and read.

Paul, I agree that HIGH RIDGE should be a valid new find. It's a good distance away from the first location. Whitecliff has a lot of kids on the trails, and with the nice weather on Sat, that and other items could have been taken.

I hunted the Whitecliff cache this morning (visit link) hoping to find a copy of the 'U.S. Army Special Forces Cache Hiding Manual'. According to the logbook and the on-line log, 'jogps' last visited the cache on Jan 27th and left a manual. There was no manual in the cache. In fact, the content of the cache was much different than what I expected by reading the logbook. So either 'jogps' didn't leave a manual or someone went to the cache just to the retrieve the manual (either they visited it before, or the cache placer wanted the manual, too!)

I looked around on the internet and learned a little more. The manual is about hiding food and ammunition for later use. One description is: 'Survival depends on having what you need-when you need it. The elite U.S. Army Special Forces are trained to operate far behind enemy lines for long periods of time and have developed proven methods of long term storage of weapons, gear food and other supplies.'

You can buy it from Yahoo Shopping for $9.95. (visit link)

Of course, we hide our caches with the intention that they actually be found by others!

I agree with Glenn on this as long as it has moved significantly from previous coordinates. But caches that have just changed names I would not feel right to log again ie. mississippi and RxR even though I guess a person could as they are listed as separate caches. - Bruce

I would think that if high ridge was moved enough, and you couldnt find anything else in town to do absolootly, I may just go find it again myself. Seems i've found everything else around here once or twice before. :) go for it. I bet ya cant find it this time. :-)) **glenn

How's this for a cache idea?
Setup waypoints and have the cacher turn on the track log. When he/she is done, have them check their tracks and identify the picture it created in order to log the cache. This would be perfect for someone that is laid off and lots of free time. See (visit link) for sample track logs and other people with tooooooooo much free time.

Hi All,

We've been lurking, but reading that letter from Mr. Carney needs to be addressed. Tracy and I have a cache in an Iowa State Park. We contacted the Park Manager directly. He had experience using a GPS for some events held at Big Creek SP, and thrilled at the idea of using it for Geocaching. In fact, he drove us around the park, and pointed out some very nice areas where caches might be hidden.

As far as environmental impact, we placed our cache 50 feet off a SNOWMOBILE TRAIL. It's almost impossible to bushwhack to it (a few foolishly tried), so walking the snowmobile trail is the only viable way to get there- very low impact cache.

We have six others in State Parks, but I'll let those cache owners speak for whether they asked permission to place them. On that note- I see nothing wrong with asking for permission. It has been good for us, because we have a dialogue with the park manager.

That's our .02

Mr. Backer contacted the state of Nebraska for a litle guidance. Here is their reply. **glenn
================================

Dear Mr. Backer:

Your inquiry to Mike Groenewold has been forwarded to this office for reply.
We understand you are interested in learning whether caches can be legally
hidden within Nebraska state park areas and wildlife management areas.

The Commission is aware of the growing popularity of Geocaching around the
nation. While yours is the first specific inquiry we have received, our
staff is already seeking information regarding the experiences of other
state park agencies around the country. Nebraska's concerns are similar to
those of other states: the potential disruption of more traditional park
activities and damage to fragile cultural and natural resources.

To answer your specific question, Commission regulations prohibit the
leaving of personal property unattended within state parks and recreation
areas for periods in excess of 24 hours. That would apply to caches and
would effectively serve to prohibit their concealment in state park areas,
inasmuch as we understand caches are typically only monitored weekly.

We hope we have been able to satisfactorily answer your question and invite
you to contact this office directly if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jim Carney

Well, I am back from the meeting with the Forest Service. It was also nice to meet some of the other cachers.

I talked to Nancy Feakes (Recreation Officer for the Mark Twain NF) (the one who has been causing the problems) before the meeting. She indicated to me she did not think caches should be allowed in Wilderness (She thinks they should be virtual caches in Wilderness). First she said they were “unnatural” and I pointed out they are hid. Then she indicated she thought there should be “discovery” recreation in Wilderness. I told her she needed to read the Wilderness Act. She said she had not yet discussed the issue with Forest Supervisor Randy Moore (her boss). I was not getting anywhere with her so I headed to talk with the Forest Supervisor (who I sent the letter to).

I ran into the Forest Service Planning Officer on the way and he started to take me to meet someone else. But Randy (Forest Supervisor) stopped me and brought up the geocaching issue before I asked him about it. He told me it sounded like a lot of fun and he would like to try doing it. He is the one that issued the closure order that Feakes claims does not allow caching in Wilderness Areas. He told me the order was not intended to prohibit geocaching. He also said he did not see a problem with caching in Wilderness Areas and did not think there would be a problem with correcting the situation. He also thought it would be good for the Forest Service to promote caching.

After talking to Randy, I told Nancy Feakes about our discussion. Feakes mentioned caching several times in her presentations. Several of us talked to her after the presentation. She seemed more cooperative this time, but she still clearly seems to have a problem with caching in Wilderness and only wants virtual caches in Wilderness. She told us the regional office was telling her to discourage caching in Wilderness. I am going to contact this person to check this out.

Randy is a nice person, but he is the type of person that addition letters would help. We can be sure Nancy Feakes will try to convince him to not allow the caches in Wilderness Areas. So I would encourage everyone to write the Forest Supervisor a letter or email:

Randy Moore
Forest Supervisor
Mark Twain National Forest
401 Fairgrounds Road
Rolla, MO 65401-2911

you can send an email to: mailroom_r9_mark_twain@fs.fed.us

I would tell him why you enjoy caching and tell him you want the Wilderness Areas open to caching.

Do not confuse the Forest Service with the National Park Service. The NPS is who says it is not allowed anywhere in National Parks claiming it is littering and avonding property. Nancy Feakes is just wanting to not allow caching in Mark Twain Wilderness Areas.

E-mail from Nancy:

Nancy Feakes, Recreation Manager
Mark Twain National Forest

First - I'm glad that you'll be able to attend the meeting. I'll be one of
the presenters, and since I have only about 5 minutes for the summary of
all the recreation on the Mark Twain, geocaching will not be more than a
mention in the formal presentation. After that, there will be an
opportunity for questions from the floor, and then there will be
opportunities for smaller discussion groups. You may want to ask a
question about geocaching during the full group Q&A, but I am really hoping
that we will be able to discuss it during the smaller discussion groups
afterwards. (I know that we will have a motorcycle group and a jeep group
attending who are also planning on some of that discussion, so I won't be
able to be in all the groups, but I would definitely like to talk to you
about it.) I think by opening up some communication and working together
while the sport is still relatively young, we can avoid some more rigid
regulations that might otherwise develop. Thanks.

Nancy Feakes, Recreation Manager for Mark Twain National Forest contacted me asking for our help in working thru the issues of geocaching, forrest service and wilderness area issues. I have to work Tues evening but i think intrested folks should go and ask questions. What would really be handy would be for someone that knows about this forrest service stuff to pop up there and talk intellegently. That part is enough to exclude me rigth off the bat. Below is Nancy's introduction note.
-----------------------------

Hi, Glenn. I am the Recreation and Wilderness Manager on the Mark Twain
National Forest, with an office in Rolla. I have been following some of
the geocaching activities for the past several months, and have some
concerns about the growing number of caches on the national forest that we
aren't notified about, and in particular, about the ones that have been
located in Wilderness. In general, we have tried to be supportive of this
activity, as long as caches are placed outside of Wilderness and are placed
so that they are not causing environmental damage, (either directly through
the placement of the cache, or more commonly indirectly, though trampling
by cache seekers). Most of the owners of caches that have caused us
concern have been very cooperative, once we contacted them. We did have
Law Enforcement remove an ammo box cache because it was suspected
(erroniously) of being associated with some drug activity in the area. I
am trying to find ways to encourage geocachers to notify us when they place
a cache on us, and to not place caches in the Wilderness. I consider this
to be a legitimate form of recreation that we would like to encourage on
the national forest, in appropriate places. We would like to work with the
geocaching community to further this, and to minimize problems. I
definitely do NOT want to see problems that would lead to establishment of
numerous regulations or permits for geocaches, and we need the help of the
geocachers if we are going to be able to avoid that as the sport continues
to grow.

John Schumacher suggested that you might be able to help us. Please
contact me if you are interested. One opportunity might be for us to meet
in St. Louis this coming Tuesday evening...we are having a public meeting
at 7PM at the Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center , 11715 Cragwold Rd,
Kirkwood, MO to help keep the public informed about what is happening on
the National Forest. Maybe we could get together for a few minutes before
or after that meeting. Thanks.

Last week end a group from STL hiked to Butches Bell Mtn cache. It too has been archived. The forrest service is worried that caching is the same as littering and may damage the enviornment yet on all nine miles of the trail there were signs NAILED into trees. There must have been a hundred of them. Looks like a lot of littering to me and i bet there was a bit of damage done to the trees with the nails. As responsible hikers, i think we should pick up all these little trash signs, remove the nails and return them to the forrest service so they can hunt down the offending parties. Ths signs are always the same small walking person with a stick. I think they are all an eyesore that spoils the enjoyment of the hike. We cant allow such littering in these areas. Do ya thing **WE** could get away with such such sillyness?? i doubt it. **glenn

As to Bell Mt, I put a note on that site. That is even more illegal than what the Park Service is doing. They are clearly out to lunch with the basis they claim it is not allowed. The Forest Service just happens to be having a public meeting at the Powder Valley Nature Center in Kirkwood at 7pm Feb 5. They will have a question/answer session and this would be a good time to complain about this. I would also hope you tell them you are sick and tired of them spending millions of dollars of our tax dollars to cut down and log the Mark Twain National Forest.

Sorry I missed the trip to Bell Mtn. Looked like fun. Any other trips planned?

Any one up for night cache at Flashback?

Regarding changing the background image on my cache pages - not much hacking - just cut and paste. Its simply a body background code inserted into the long description of the cache text. The code needs to refer to a image file stored at a location other than www.geochaching.com. I saw this done on another cache page and cut and paste the one line of code.

I placed two new caches over the weekend and another one today. Go get em.

I should have taken the day off today to cache. Came home to 70 watchlist notification messages this evening. The marjority were from Steve & Mary Brown from Kansas City, MO. They swept through the area, taking and leaving nothing . They couldn't find the trailhead for Miss Bee or Pokemon and couldn't figure out Intersection. But they found practically every other cache in the St. Louis area!

Here is their log from Flashback: 1015 - We were severely reprimanded twice for doing this one during the day. First we went cross country from the Magnum 44 cache. That was tuff. Crossed 3 hard to climb mountains. Then had a hard time locating something out of the ordinary. It was fun, but it would have been much better at night. Thanks for placing the cache. We'll take this idea back to Kansas City.

Some of the new cachers are putting food in the caches.

MrB is back at it and racking up some numbers!

Talk amongst yourselves. Here's a topic: Is Mean Gene and Butch the same person?

Someone left a 'U.S.Army Caching Hiding Manual' at the CD Exchange cache. Must be a stock item for user jogps (227 found) because they put one in many caches. Maybe that's what I need- a 'signature' trinket. This cacher is from Tennessee.

No hopping on one leg or backwards- we actually got into flashlight caching while I was working in Tuscon for about 10 days last november. It just added an additional level of challenge to finding caches. The only reason we tried it in the snow was just that we had the day off, it was nice that day and we wanted to get out for some adventure - so we thought we would give it a try.

It just makes geocaching a bit more challenging and requires much more teamwork. We had a blast and managed to plant our last two travel bugs and log two new caches too!

When are all the logs from people who 'snow-cached' today going to arrive? Did you find all 4 Lewis and Clark caches today, Barramus?! (I stayed home and burned a brushpile).

I see that there are a lot of new cachers logging finds, who must have gotten a new GPS for Xmas. I still get a kick out of a few of the logs from last Xmas from people who said they found their first cache and now were hooked (especially since they stopped searching after about 3 finds!).

Elaine and I did a driving trip to Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago during the 4th of July last year. Unfortunately, that was before I knew anything about geocaching. This spring, we are going to do another driving trip to see Wisconsin in the spring (it's been ages since I've been there during that time period) and you can bet caches are going to dictate our route this time! Barramus gave me a travel bug tag to use and I'm going to place one somewhere during that trip.

I have more than a pedestrian interest in how the government agencies view geocaching in the St. Louis area, as far as placements in local, county, state and national parks are concerned. If there was ever a 'simposium' or something that would bring the two sides together, I'd definately participate.

As far as the precision of private GPS is concerned, if we can get them more accurate then I can fullfill my dream of placing my 'cache-on-the-head-of-a-needle'. (It'll be hidden in a haystack, of course ...)

Thomas-

Thanks for your response. Is is somewhat reassuring to find out that my experience (with people not willing to leave something comparable to what they took) is not unique. I have one cache right in the middle of town (Dinosaur Cache) that I have restocked multiple times but I think I will just give up and yield to periodically cleaning out the trash. Its interesting that people are willing to spend big money on buying a GPS, Batteries, Lots of Gas and their time but can't seem to be willing to stop at the Dollar Store or the local Walgreens to spend a buck or two to pickup something worthy of leaving in a cache. A sign of the times? I used to collect trinkets and leave pocket knives, coffee cups from interesting places, beanie babies and now have pretty much gone to collecting cache certificates and photos of each cache we visit. We still throughly enjoy Geocaching and creating new caches. In fact Mary and I just enrolled in a 3 month course/entitled Ghost Towns of the Black Hills as this should give us new ideas for new caches.

Scott, I've had the same experience as you have, as have most people here in the St. Louis area I believe. I've also learned to do the same thing as you, which is to not leave the good stuff and just take a pic, do a log entry, and go. As far as the caches I've hidden, I just clean out the crap and throw it away (in a trash can of course). I used to restock them occasionally but I don't bother anymore. It is really sad but I feel like my efforts have been taken advantage of.

Thomas.

We have planted half the caches in Western South Dakota (geocaching is still just catching on up here) and I was just interested in following your conversations. The first dozen caches we planted we tried to put really great stuff in (things like Am/FM Walkmans, Recharageable Batteries and charger, hand held altimeters and some cool treasure stuff but I have grown weary of people taking the good stuff and leaving things like a package of 10 paper clips, a wood pencil, a Hardies or McDonalds toy, or a pencil eraser. I have even had a cache wiped out of most of the good stuff with just one family of 5 who visited and left 5 little plastic army men in its place. Do you all encounter the same thing? Anymore I go for signing the log and taking a photo and just clean out the junk in our caches when we check on them. How do you all handle this kind of stuff?

-Scott

Here is what happened to the Greer Springs Cache. Another Geocacher contacted Jody and Nancy about the missing Greer Springs Cache. I am mearly passing this info along in hopes of fostering some communications between cache placers and the governing agencies. The 1st note is from Jody Eberly, a Wildlife Biologist with the Mark Twain Natl Forrest.

The second note is from Nancy Feakes who is the Recreation and Wilderness Manager for Mark Twain Natl Forrest. Nance likes Geocaching and really wants to help cachers place appropriate caches. I think we need to start keeping these folks in mind when we place caches. I am just trying to get the word out that it may be better to have the agencies on our side rather than against us. I should probably mark my boxes as GEOCACHES also. I guess it might be strange coming across a camo'd box in the woods. **Glenn
------------------
... yes, one
of our law enforcement agents did remove the geocache box at Greer Spring. A technician had noticed it on an inspection trip to the spring and didn't have a clue what it was - had some concern that it might be something nasty. With all the meth lab
activity and other wierdos that tend to gravitate to public land, we are alot more spooked about things in the woods. Once we found out what it was, we did some checking and our recreation specialist here at Rolla has been tracking caches on National Forest land. However, many times, we don't get notified that one has been placed, and not many of our people
actually in the woods every day know what they are. If this is a recreation pastime you are involved in, perhaps you could e-mail our recreation person Nancy Feakes - nfeakes@fs.fed.us to discuss this with her.

----------------------------------
From Nancy about geocaching...
As Jody mentioned, I have been trying to track the caches on the Mark Twain NF, but haven't devoted enough time to it to be able to even place a watch on all of them. I personally support this activity on the National Forest as a legitimate form of recreation when all the guidelines are followed, but I'm sure you realize that it is not appropriate in all locations. It is actually illegal to have anything other than a virtual cache in a congressionally designated Wilderness, but I think there are 2 caches in violation of that right now. We are also concerned with caches that will lead to development of user-made trails in Wilderness, or that will lead to trampling of sensitive ecosystems, or will be detrimental to threatened, endangered, or sensitive plant or animal species, or that are likely to lead to erosion or to other resource damage. Even though the guidance info on the geocache website recommends that you notify the landowner or land management agency when a cache is placed, we have yet to be notified by the owners when ANY of the caches on the Mark Twain were placed. I have corresponded with a couple of the owners of caches that I have watches on, and they were very cooperative. I am hoping that we can get the word out and get better notification...otherwise, we may end up having to formally permit these. Thanks for any help you can give us.

I got a kick out of reading Feakes' response to Glenn. I had some dealings with her when she was a District Ranger in West Virginia. She certianly was not concerned with protecting the environment there. One time she approved a race of 200 mountian bikers in a very senstitive area. She acknowledged sentistive species had been killed by past races and likely would be killed by racers again. But she had no problem with it. She refused to even preform the type of analysis Federal law required before she could permit the activity.

I also found her not to be able to understand simple plain laws (but the Forest Service has a tendancy to say a law does not mean what it says). I do not know where she gets it is illegal to place a cache in Wilderness. That is ridicilious.

I was asked by the owner of the Prime cache to remove the referrence to the website to generate primes as it was making things too easy from my log here so I am modifying my entry here
Here is another cache like the Palidromes and the survey marker recovery cache that can be done anywhere. (visit link) This one is based on combining prime numbers to form coordinates. There are alot of prime number combinations your front yard maybe a cache. I good site to check if your coordinates are prime is (removed at cache owners request) There are also prime palidromes thus one site two caches... just kidding. An example of a prime palidrome is N38 53.583 W90 37.309 which is right on the Mississippi in Calhoun county little more than a mile from one Myotis's Calhoun county caches. There are several others in area. - Bruce

Well, isn't Mr. Bill Elliot just a fine example of our tax dollars at work. You do the guy a fovor and that is his response. When exactly did his compadre notice the GPSR missing and become so frantic ? Must have neen in the 2 hours it took us to drive home and email him! I think he lost it and couldn't find it. If he didn't lose it, but stashed it as he said, then wouldn't that be considered littering ? Leaving property unattended for more than 24 hours ? I say put it back NEAR the cave as noted by Gln. Or send it to him collect.

I find it interesting that the employee was frantic for loosing something that he indicated that was stashed there for a reason as they have lots of stuff in caves all over the place? sounds like an arrogant ass that cant keep track of his toys. We might need to do a little more cave exploring. and like you said, it's just easier to put it back (almost) where you found it... if at all. glenn

I had an interesting experience last Saturday. You can read the log entry at: (visit link)

Below is an email thread between myself and an employee of our favorite organization: Missouri Department of Conservation. I am not leaving any
editorial comments about this because I think the interaction speaks for itself.

I title this experience: No good deed goes unpunished

------------------------
My original e-mail from Sat evening, 1/5/2002:

I and two other 'geocachers' were poking around the Onyx cave today. I found a Magellan GPS hidden in one of the nooks to the upper
right of the cave entrance. We saw the Property of label on it, but it wasn't until I got it home and turned it on that I saw the splash
screen with your name on it (MDC Bill Elliot). I wanted to make sure it got back to the right person and I think *you* are that person! I
apologize for taking it if you meant to leave it there on purpose.

I have it at my home in Eureka,Mo. Let me know how I can get it back to you. Call or e-mail me.

------------------------
Mr. Elliot's Response the next Mon moring, 1/7/2002:

Paul,

I would appreciate it if you would mail that GPS receiver back to me right away, at the address below.

My field assistant, who stashed it there, has been frantic over the loss of this valuable instrument. We have various instruments located in and around caves, so you really should not have removed it, especially with a govt. tag on it. But, thanks for contacting me. I left a phone message for you with the address and phone.

Sincerely,

My Reply one hour later:

And here I thought I was doing a good deed! A Property of tag infers ownership. And within hours of finding the item, I tracked down the owner. I didn't want to leave it, on the chance that someone with selfish motives might find it and not return it.

To me, Property of on a portable item out in the woods doesn't mean I left it here on purpose and if you take it, you are a thief. Perhaps an additional note near the item, explaining why it is there, will prevent this from happening again. I would have put it back, had I known there were neat scientific studies in
progress! I lost a wallet on a trail a few weeks ago and if I hadn't actually found it myself, I would have been so greatful if someone else had found it and returned it to me. I'm sure it wouldn't have crossed their mind that I had left it laying in the leaves on purpose. I think we are both lucky that our item didn't fall
into the wrong hands.

Since I would be returning the item at my own expense, it would actually be cheaper for me to drive back to the cave and put it back where I found it. That's another option, so I'll wait for a response from you before doing anything. When this episode is over, this story is going to make an interesting entry to my online
discussion group.

Please be aware that the item is intact and in fine shape.

------------------------
Mr. Elliot's immediate reply (1/7/2001 9:37am)

Please just mail the GPS to me, as I asked. I will send you the postage in return.

Thank you,
William R. Elliott

My turn to rant, TAP TAP TAP, Quiet please, Thank you...We all need to remember why we got in to this sport in the first place, it's fun. We have all been introduced to some really wonderful places we may have never known about if it weren't for Goecaching. It's great to get out in the woods on a nice day and go for a treasure hunt or just to go for a walk and see the sights. It's up to everybody to see that the caches are in a safe and enjoyable location, and for the caches to be in good shape. It doesn't matter if the cache only has a logbook and pen or if it is packed full of toys, music and other great things. What does matter is if one goes out caching and finds a cache with broken useless crap, candy wrappers, cigarette butts, moldy stuff and other trash it seems to take the joy out of it. I've noticed that first time cachers are hooked instantly and really seem to enjoy this sport - it IS addictive (why else would we spend our weekends and all :) of our spare time running about looking for tupperware and ammo boxes). So again it is up to ALL of us to keep this sport clean and safe and well mannered for all of us to enjoy, kids, dogs, adults, everybody. Those of us that have placed caches did it with hopes it would bring joy to the people that try to find it. We all need to take care of those caches by noting their condition in the logs. Most of us carry x-tra ziplocs, pens, etc. just in case the cache needs help. There may be people who may not be able or even care if their cache is maintained. A reasonable effort must be made to notify the placer, if that doesn't work we should try to clean it up or as a last resort have it archived. Well I'm running out of breath, thanks for your time and remember this is a really great sport for all.

FYI, I am going to create a two part cache ending with the original virtual cache and view of the high ridge cache. Hopefully I will be able to beat the rain and do it in the morning tomorrow. Since this was the first cache in St. Louis, I would hate to remove and archive the history! With the better hidden, off site cache, plundering shouldn't be a problem anymore. Sorry for the delay of my duties but we were out of town for the Holidays. In closing, I'd like to congratulate STL in a hell of a first year in Geocache hunting.

There used to be a famous geocacher round here named WTMRN. Who are you and what have you done with WTM?

What say me about what.. pretty sure i didnt misunderstand anything.. you asked me if i wanted your caches, i eventually said OK. end of story. .. Since your caches was undefined i looked at your list. there were 5 caches.

transcript of relevant notes follow:
-----
12-16-01. .8:53pm . If you want to I will pass ownership of my caches to you by arciving them and you can write new cache pages, otherwise I will be picking them up. Andi may still want to manage hers though, wtm
---
12-16-01 10:13am better not. i dont think i could maintain them all. thanks tho. , gln
----
12-23-01 12:26pm you still wanting to transfer your caches?? gln
----
12-24-01 2:17pm yes, especially Greer spring since it is a good cache...wtm
---
Around this time i sent a note about which 5 caches, Greer, High & Dry, Ghost riders, Lunitic & watchtower.
-----
12-24-01 10:22 Done, thanks... wtm
----
On the morning of 12-25-01 i redid the 5 pages that were archived in the account that the picnic cache is in. I did not think it would be right to put them in my personal account as i did not hide them. The group account seemed to do until we can figure out just what the heck we are doing. Also at that time I started looking for interested cachers to help look after the caches as i still didnt think i could maintain them. So far most of them are taken care of. I have a list here somplace but as usual, i cant find anything. I have yet to ask Mean Gene, Denali and others. We can always use a few more helpers too, ya wanna help? In the meantime the caches are intact for the finding. High and Dry is being repaired saturday. if you wish i can rename it .. Up and out of the Weather.

Well there must have been a miscommunication or something. I never gave away high and dry. The cache is wasted since someone could'nt put it back in its original hiding spot which is a dry spot regardless of the weather.
I did however note that Ghost Riders is missing from your list and I did give that one up to Glenn. By the way I only recognize individuals, I could'nt give a crap about a geocachers assn.

The letter boxers that have been mentioned have a long history of not maintaining their letterboxes. the cache at Knobloch, Popeye and others, the zoo caches are another in a long example of their lack of intrest. The owner of the island cache seems to have the same level of intrest. when the tracks was missing in action for a while it was not the cache owner that got it back in gear. The Endicott cache was a mess when it was new and has not been maintained by anyone other than the cachers. The owner has been notified.

*** High ridge is another matter. I know that the cache owners have been there not long ago checking on things and they were fine. High Ridge just keeps getting messed up by passerbys. The owner contacted me for suggestions. I am not sure on what to do. It is a very nice spot that should be shared, perhaps an offset cache, coords at the site now leading to the cache in a more remote area. It is having a hard time staying intact in its present form.

While on the topic of neglected caches, I do have a question on a related topic... what is to be done with no longer existing caches. The particular ones that come to mind are the micros in the zoo. For sure a couple of them do not exist any longer. The only one that for sure exists is Teddy the others are questionable. Another that comes to mind is (visit link) which there is no proof whether it exists or not but there has been significant river flooding since the cache has been placed so its survival is questionable.

There was a cache over here in the Knobeloch woods that had had been raided and was all over the woods. After several log comments and e-mails to the cache owner, who was unwilling to take care of it, I went out and removed the cache/trash myself. I think the geocaching community has a resposibility to either repair(if able) the caches we find or remove them if necessary. However, the cache owner should be given the chance remove their own cache first. If they are unable to get to it in a reasonable period of time, then then the next cacher out there should use their own judgement as to the fate of the cache. If you place a cache that you can't or won't maintain, then cache maintenance becomes the job of the cacher on the scene! The future of this sport depends on all of us to PREVENT GEOTRASH! Rant over. .....Denali

As a cache owner, Luke gets a note every time someone logs his cache. People have been logging the trash situation for many months. I am sure he is aware of it. In a note from Jeramy many months ago to either WTMRN or myself, i forgot now, he addressed our complaints about another Geo-trash cache. His opinon at the time was that as cachers we all have the abiliy to maintain caches as we go along, which we all do. We also have the ability to remove disabled caches as well Jeramy actually said it was our obligation. We are almost obligated to remove them to keep the supply of caches clean and functional. Now, that was good advice 8 months ago when the list of cachers was rather limited. I dont think i would want somone pulling one of my caches for no good reason or without at least several notes in the logs. Caches were not intended to be around for ever. 6-8 months or so was the life expectancy of a cacne before it was to be retired or moved to help prevent environmental damage and a trash situation. RxR has been there a long time and a lot of us have enjoyed it. I think it was my second ever find but it seems to have just run out of time. I decided long time ago that if i ever got back over to RxR i would pull it. Black ops beat me to it. Hopefully we will maintain our caches a little better than this one. Maintainance is something to we should think about when we place a cache. When we get so many caches and have them far away from home, upkeep could be a problem. I can hardly keep up with just my 5 or 6. I dont know how Myotes keeps up with his zillion. I hear that there are even MORE changes in the works for a bunch of the ST. Louis Geocachers Assn. caches. Who are these goof balls anyway?? **Glenn, St. Louis, Mo

They havent liked us much in the last year and they are continuing to issue warnings to stay out of the parks. Seems like or 2-3 visitors/ month is more than the landscape can handle. Just how many folks have gone to places like Rock Pile Mtn.. 3 maybe? Sacred dirt, endangered moss, fragile dead trees and poison ivy, The stuff has been around for zillions of years and it's now falling apart all because of a few geocachers. Good gawd the world IS falling apart and the Feds must save us. . For goodness sake, stay indoors, stay out of the woods, dont drive, return to horses for transportation .. no, they poop on the ground, just walk then... no, that hurts the dirt.. better we just sit in one spot and not move much. The sky is falling, i'm sure of it. This public service announcement has been brought to you by Cheeze Wizz, one of the oficial foods of geocachers all across the globe. Glenn,

I have both the Garmin topo software and Topo USA and the MO maps. I have Maptech topos for IL. The Garmin is expensive, but you can download the topo (and street maps) to the GPS. It is pretty nice having the maps built into the GPS. The interface is great and easy to use. It is the best way to manage way points, create routes, etc. for a Garmin reciever.

The Topo USA interface sucks. But it does a good job of handling the topo maps in the state moduels. I like the interface for the MapTech topos much better than TopoUSA.

If you got any more questions or want to see them let me know.

As to the concentration issue, I do not think there are enough of them. Remember concentration is relative to how many caches you have. What happens when you get all the caches in the area? If one thinks they are too concentrated, don't hunt all of them. Come back multiple times.

I ended up not going down the Jack's Fork this weekend due to the rain forcast, so I did not get up a First Amendment Cache. I think my next cache will be a virtual cache in the best eagle watching spot in the area. I am going require you to see at least 25 eagles at the spot before you can log the cache. With the weather turnig cold, the eagles will finally be in the area. It is going to be on the flight path into a night roost so you will have to be there in the morning or just before sunset to see all the eagles flying in. You should be able to see 1-200 eagles in a half hour.

Guys and gals:

Now that I've enjoyed this sport for almost 2 months now, I realize that I've placed some pretty lame cache locations out there (Rt 66 & What A Gem). I know, I know, what about the others? Reading through the Groundspeak forums, some cachers don't have much good to say about their finds. Everyone in the St. Louis area always has good comments in all of the caches, and adheres to the saying, if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything. I did get some constructive criticism at Intersection, explaining the difference between N, S, E, & W, but that was well appreciated.

What I'm getting at is should I archive the two above caches since there is not much challange or any WOW, neat place at the end? Doesn't an archived cache decrement the find count?

myotis, all i'm doing is sharing my thoughts and ideas on the subject of caches on national park land. I don't think there's anything i don't get. There was some suggestion that caches should be allowed on a free speech basis. (One term used was expressive conduct) I am of the opinion this is not a valid argument in favor of caching. I'm allowed to have that opinion. Our opinions may vary that's all. Also, that the lands are public and belong to all of us is certainly true, it does not follow that all activities should necessarily be allowed merely because we own the land. That the land belongs to everyone is exactly why we each should not be allowed to do as we individually please.

One comment off the free speech topic...

I just realized that the two caches of mine that were removed from the national park were NOT in unspoiled/untouched/natural locations. One was under some rocks at the base of a road sign and the other was in a mine tunnel. If i had hidden them in pristine untouched places (someone's secret spot) i'd be more understanding in having them removed. But they weren't in such places. At the foot of a road sign for goodness sake. Sigh.

(You can see i have very mixed feelings about this whole thing.)

I was just pointing out that arguing in favor of caches on the free speech basis doesn't work. At least not to my thinking. And i do have mixed feelings about caches in National or State Parks. These are special places and deserve special protection. Geocachers are a small percentage of park visitors and as such we don't present much of a threat. However this is only a question of volume. Consider what would happen if suddenly the general public became hooked on caching with car and busloads of visitors all clambering about for the best hiding places. It would be a disaster. Of course this isn't about to happen but i do understand the concerns of the park service.

Consider another example: Say you have a very special secret spot in a park. A place you love and come to to get away from everything and everyone. I have some places like this. Now consider someone else also loves this place and wants to share it so they hide a geocache there. Your secret spot is no longer yours anymore. It's now a waypoint and there is an ammo box under the rock you love to sit on and think. The park service is responsible for protecting these lands for everyone and not everyone is going to be happy all the time.

Florian,

You are comparing apples to oranges. A cache is hidden, a bill board is not. There are compelling government intrest in prohibiting a non-commerical billboard in a park. There is no such intrest in outright prohibiting caches. As I have said, speech can be regulated on public lands. Prohibiting caches would not pass constitutional mustard. Prohibiting billboards in National Parks clearly would.

I meant the billboard comment somewhat facetiously. However if one is arguing that caches should be allowed on the basis of free speech i don't see why a non-commercial billboard, sign or political banner would not also fit under the umbrella of free speech. I think we all would want these prohibited within National Parks.

Ok. What's happening here? Are we declaring defeat? Who's responsible? I want to point a finger!

Maybe Ranger Rick can give us an insight on what is happening in his profession and with those who 'monitor' public land in the St. Louis area. He seems to have a sympathetic ear. There must be something constructive we can do to repair the damage of frivolous news stories that send the enjoyment of the sport into a downward spiral.

The logs are filled with stories of people who have discovered a new reason to get out of the house with their family and enjoy the outdoors. How many times have we said we didn't know that place existed or thanks for the hike? The basic reason for the existence of geocaching should not be compromised.

I may not lead the charge, but I'll be there in the throng to help damn those who would destroy what adds much to the quality of my life - the freedom to place and hunt caches and the right to enjoy the wonders of nature as a result. If that means reminding the government agencies the reason they exist in the first place, then that's what I'm ready to do.

It's all a matter of choices i think. You choose the caches you want to hunt. (Frankly, some relatively close to me just don't interest me so i don't bother with them.) You also choose when and where to hide caches. If you don't have fun in making and hiding a cache then it's okay not to. (I am fortunate in having lots of open spaces around me to hide caches in.) What's important is to do what you enjoy and what brings you happiness. I went on a great hike this morning near my home. I did visit a cache (one i had placed) but the hike would have been just as great with or without the cache.

I recieved an email about 2months ago from the DNR. They said that my Rock Pile mountain cache was placed in violation of the law. (I dont remember which one exactly.)They said that they are concerned about excessive traffic that may damage the ecosystem. They tried to get me to remove it that day. I told them that I tried to place the cache that would have the least impact and that i am monitoring this cache closely for any problems. The Ranger thanked me for my cooperation and equal concerns. I am suprised that they contacted me on this one. It is one of the least logged caches that I have. I think there is only 2or3 people that have loged entries to this cache.

I can see this subject has aquired a lot of attention! It could be worse.

I was in KY and TN the first week of Oct. (BG-before GPS) to hike in some parks and natural areas. It was quite a shock when I went to my first stop in TN (Burgess Falls NA) to find a sign at the entrance that said Park Closed. I talked to the ranger there and the Governor of TN permanently closed 15 SP's and NA's. Of the remaining parks and NA's, 3 are open 7 days/week, since they are resort parks with lodging, and the remaining ones are open Wed-Sun. I asked about parking outside the gate and walking to the falls but he said they were told to arrest anyone caught in a closed park or NA.

TN does not have a state income tax and the voters turned it down on the ballot, so the Governor is getting back at the residents by shutting down the parks. I would think it hurts tourism more than the locals. Besides Nashville, Chattanogga, and the Smokies, the states main attractions are the parks and NA's. At least MO and the citizens believe spending monies on parks, greenspace, and preservation is a good idea.

FYI Here is what the US Supreme Court has had to say about the subject:

The First Amendment provides that “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech . . . .” 6 There is no doubt that as a general matter peaceful picketing and leafletting are expressive activities involving “speech” protected by the First Amendment. E. g., Carey v. Brown, 447 U.S. 455, 460 (1980); Gregory v. Chicago, 394 U.S. 111, 112 (1969); Jamison v. Texas, 318 U.S. 413 (1943); Thornhill v. Alabama, 310 U.S. 88 (1940); Lovell v. Griffin, 303 U.S. 444 (1938); Schneider v. State, 308 U.S. 147 (1939).

It is also true that “public places” historically associated with the free exercise of expressive activities, such as streets, sidewalks, and parks, are considered, without more, to be “public forums.” See Perry Education Assn. v. Perry Local Educators’ Assn., 460 U.S. 37, 45 (1983); Carey v. Brown, supra, at 460; Hudgens v. NLRB, 424 U.S. 507, 515 (1976); Cox v. New Hampshire, 312 U.S. 569, 574 (1941); Hague v. CIO, 307 U.S. 496, 515 (1939). In such places, the government’s ability to permissibly restrict expressive conduct is very limited: the government may enforce reasonable time, place, and manner regulations as long as the restrictions “are content-neutral, are narrowly tailored to serve a significant government interest, and leave open ample alternative channels of communication.” Perry Education Assn., supra, at 45. See, e. g., Heffron v. International Society for Krishna Consciousness, Inc., 452 U.S. 640, 647 , 654 (1981); Grayned v. City of Rockford, 408 U.S. 104, 115 (1972); Cox v. Louisiana, 379 U.S. 559 (1965) (Cox II). Additional restrictions such as an absolute prohibition on a particular type of expression will be upheld only if narrowly drawn to accomplish a compelling governmental interest. See, e. g., Perry Education Assn., supra, at 46; Widmar v. Vincent, 454 U.S. 263 (1981).
United States v. Grace, 461 U.S. 171, 176-7 (1983).

WWW.GEOCACHING.COM has a page called 'Guide to Creating and Hiding a Cache' (visit link) Here's an excerpt:

'... If you place the cache on public lands you need to contact the managing agency to find out about their rules. You will be in violation of federal regulation by placing a cache in any area administered by the National Park Service (US). The National Park regulations are intended to protect the fragile environment, and historical and cultural areas found in the parks ...'

'... It was pretty easy and the area was fabulous! It was in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Notice I said was? The Park service notified him the next day that he had to remove it from the park so it's no longer listed on the site. It just so happens that I had a cache in the park and I had to get mine out too! Now that it is out, I try my best to stay away from the NPS area. Quite frankly, they can bite me! I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere. I'm sick and tired of paying taxes for Government operations that tell me what I can and can't do. The NP is for the people. I could have understood it if we were digging up flowers or hurting wildlife in the park but were were not ...'

Here's a mixed, but good review of geocaching in the Kansas City Star: (visit link)

THINK BEFORE YOU HIDE
'Steve Lampone, superintendent of parks for Kansas City, said he's been pleased with the game's ability to draw visitors to the parks in general and to specific areas within the parks. The parks system may consider using geocaching to expose people to new developments or new park properties, he said.

But 'cowboy caches' -- caches hidden without permission -- can damage the relationship between game enthusiasts and park managers, Lampone said. Some park areas are more sensitive than others, he explained, and placing a cache there could cause irreparable damage.

People who would like to hide a cache in a park should contact the park's managers and ask for help in choosing an appropriate location, he said.

However, some park managers have banned the game from their properties. The National Park Service won't allow people to hide caches on federal land because visitors could damage or destroy natural or archaeological resources.

[These parks are pretty special to the people of this country, said Mike Butler, a special agent with the National Park Service. There are things there that we are sworn to protect.]

Some local officials also worry about the effects the game could have on their parks. Concerned about large crowds of people roaming through the town's small parks, the city of Mission prohibits geocaching on public property.

[It's something we may be open to down the road, said Steve Corry, director of Mission's parks and recreation department. We have one park that might lend itself to the activity, but we need to make sure our city feels comfortable with bringing that many people in.]

Paul Lamble, a geocaching enthusiast from Overland Park, said geocachers and park managers will be able to find a compromise if both parties respect and understand the other's position. Asking for permission before hiding a cache will help build positive awareness of the game, he said.

[As the sport matures, the knee-jerk objections to it will fade away, Lamble said.]'

Glenn, did they give the authority under which they would remove the cache or state what law, rule, or regulation they claim caching violates?

For the record, I have 2 caches on NPS land (Round Springs and Big Springs). I tententativly am planning on canoeing the Jack's Fork next weekend and place more caches on NPS land. Perhaps I will put up a 1st Amendment Cache as comment on the way the NPS has been dealing with caches. I might write the NPS and tell them I have the caches and tell them I have a constitutional right to do it and see what they say.

If the Missouri Consevation Departmant oversees state land then yes, we have a problem with the state. The Conservation manager i spoke with said he didnt need another job and would not go out looking for caches but he would have to pick them up if he had work to do in the area. He did mentione a cache in Hilsboro that was going to be picked up sooner than later because it was in a nature area. I think over time and as the agents get around a bit, our caches will start to be removed.

My first comment is that person should not have placed a cache in the shaft. Doing things like that gives us a bad name. There is no problem with them not allowing caching in areas for safety reasons or to protect resources.

Applying the unattended property regulations violates the 1st Amendment. (The Superintendent does not even know how to properly cite the regulation. It should be 36 CFR § 2.22(a).) He also did not properly quote the regulation. He cut off part of it that is relevant and did not even put . . . to show he had deleted art of the regulation. The entire sentence is, “Leaving property unattended for longer than 24 hours, except in locations where longer time periods have been designated or in
accordance with conditions established by the superintendent.”

Even if there were not Constitutional issues, caching still would not violate this regulation. “Unattended” is not defined in the regulation. In those cases you use the ordinary dictionary definition for the word. Unattended is defined as “Not being attended to, looked after, or watched: an unattended fire.” “Attended” is defined as “To take care; give attention: We'll attend to that problem later.” A cache is clearly not abandoned or unattended.

Another rule of statutory construction is you cannot interpret a regulation or statute to have absurd results. Under the Superintendent’s reading leaving your car while you go on a two-day backpack or float trip would violate this regulation. That is an absurd result.

Even if it was illegal, do not they have something better to do? If they are concerned about litter, why don’t they grab a bag and go pick some up? The National Parks are in bad shape. They are not well maintained. Don’t they have something better to do?

Glenn, I am not sure if we should ask the state about it. As far as I know only the Rockwoods cache has been a problem and that was an issue specific to Rockwoods. No one has suggested there is any problems with caching on state lands have they? Maybe we should develop a contingency plan in case we have any problems in the area on public lands. I would be willing to help out. Heck with as many caches as I have, it may be one of mine that they go after. I thing the approach should be we do not have problems with rules or regulations that protect resources or public safety. But we have a constitutional right to express ourselves on public lands. One thing people can do to make a better constitution case is to express yourself in the logs. For example, criticize what the government is doing or let your thoughts be known. Most of you know I am very critical of the government in some of my caches.

Barramus, I am not an attorney, so I cannot be a “legal representative.” But I do legal work for a living and have sued the Federal government 6 times without an attorney and I won all 6 cases.

Glenn, congratulations on number 200. Which was it?

I am not sure what to do about this. After talking with wally.. ops, Ranger Rick, it is clear that he knows where most all of the caches are. He suggested we start requesting permission of the site managers and start writing letters to jeff. city for some sort of clarification on the rules as there really arn't any guidelines for geocaching. I think if there are any communications and legal savvy folks geocaching and helping with this, I think we should get together with wally as he seemed interested in geocaching and at least willing to help get some guidance for us and his agency. He even gave me some stuff to put in the picnic cache. I believe he would help us. Problem is, once we ask permission and are turned down we may be in a bind when we place the cache there anyway. We have a cunundrum. **Glenn, St. Louis, Mo

Ranger Rick - Wasn't that the raccoon mascot for an elementary school environment magazine? (visit link) Here's someone who was affected in a political way by Ranger Rick: (visit link) ... When I perceive a threat to something I care about, my first impulse is to make it into a park ...

I'm in a cynical mood. This, despite the fact that finding two new caches today gave me a personal goal I could be proud of. I'm still energized by the hunts and can't seem to get the sport out of my mind (although, I can't hold a candle to Glen, Denali and BruceS!). This morning, I ordered (6) ammo boxes over the internet whose sole purpose is to be used for new caches. The problem is - where do/can I put them?

The number of public areas in the St. Louis vicinity that don't already have a cache planted, in or near them, are few. You could argue that more than one cache can share an area, but I've seen people whine that some caches are 'too close together'. There is no denying the fact that saturation is inevitable and can be an issue, but I don't think St. Louis has reached that point ... yet.

The people who complain that caches are 'too close together' are not the ones who visit the more remote areas. But I have to say, I haven't seen too many caches retired/archived, either. A question to those who have been in the sport longer, or have read the GroundSpeak newsgroups: When should a cache be archived?

I'm not thrilled by the recent news that St. Louis caches are going to be confiscated when rangers happen to be in the vicinity. For the sake of the safety of humanity (by whose edict?), is the sport going to degrade to finding coupons at 4x4 posts in the woods that can be redeemed for a Big Gulp at Seven-11? What will be come of the rubic's cube keyring and the Where's George dollar?!

Here is a post from the gpsstash group on yahoo...

-----Original Message-----
From: B. Hunt
Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2001 11:07 AM
To: gpsstash@yahoogroups.com
Subject: [gpsstash] National & State Parks OFF LIMITS!

Most of us realize that it is against the law
to stash a cache in ANY national park.

Here in New York State, it is also agains
the law to stash a cache in ANY state park.
Prohibited to leave any personal property....

It might be advised to check the New Jersey
laws as they affect Hi Point and Stokes Forest.

The topic was explicitly discussed as it pertains
to geocaching at our local Department of
Environment Control and they issued a department
policy reenforcing the general state law.

Note, that Rocky River Cache (a beautiful hike
and experience, by the way) is, under this
provision, an illegal stash. In fact, the trail head
is specifically posted as off-limits ANY trespassing
from December 1 to March 31. Purpose here is to
protect the winter habitat of the bald eagle. The state
purchased the river valley specifically for this purpose.

I appreciate that this subject is extremely disappointing
news for all geocaching and would be delighted to be
corrected. Anyway, all responsible participants would do
well to check on their local laws and regulations.

Please tell me I'm wrong!
....patrick

The gpsstash page (visit link)
The GPS Stash Hunt page. (visit link)

This in particular is the reason I'm glad that geocaching hasn't become
anything like a national phenomenon. There are enough stashes in my area
(Maryland) and as long as the number of participants is limited, it appears
we're 'flying under the radar'. If millions of people were doing this, I'm
sure there would be a lot of trampled over wilderness. As a Boy Scout of
many years I know how to be kind to nature, so I'm glad the unmwashed
multitudes are planted in front of the TV instead of caching. :)

Unless and until the (either state or federal) park service removes all
caches on park lands, I'm hoping it's a 'live and let live' kind of
activity. I don't plan on disturbing anything I wouldn't ordinarily disturb
and I'm assuming other cachers are doing the same.

If someone is going to maintain that it's a 'criminal' activity, I'm going
to take the position that I'm already a criminal. I speed. I don't always
come to a complete stop at stop-signs. I jaywalk. I'll drive after
consuming one or two glasses of wine with dinner. I've taped programs on
Television and shown or even given them to my friends without express
written permission. And... I geocache in national parks. The government has
criminalized much of what I do almost every day.

This isn't to say that I think people should encroach on a bald eagle's
protected habitat, but a geocache 20 feet off a marked trail? I don't
believe I'm doing any harm, just like me driving 45 in a 40 isn't doing any
harm.

That's just my opinion. Of course, I could be wrong.

Alex Johns

Spoke with the ranger we shall call Rick (to protect the names of the rich and famous) for almost 2 hrs today about the old Geocachers Picnic cache and many other things. Ranger Rick basically thinks that Geocaching seems like a great non-consumptive (fancy ranger words) use of the land and is a great way for folks to getting outside and moving around BUT not at Rockwoods Reservation. The place is very dangerous in off trail areas and that is what had his staff worried. Rick was exceedingly nice and very helpful with many hints on how we might go about getting caches placed “officially”, i.e.: asking permission and all that. The problem is, no one in the upper levels of conservation land has given caching any thought. They haven’t banned it but they haven’t been given the go ahead either. So, in the meantime, while he is not going to go out of his way to find a cache, IF he is in the area of say Forrest 44 doing some other work, he will have to pick them up. We may need to get together and discuss how we are going to place caches around here. **Glenn, St. Louis, Mo

Just goes to show that publicity can be good and bad for this hobby. It can bring in new cachers, as well as wake up 'Urban Foresters' to the knowledge that there may be caches planted in their 'jurisdiction'.

What do you bet this is related to the Sunday news story on channel 2? Why, after the cache being planted for 3 months, would this be confiscated now?

I was initially offended by the Rockwood cache removal. But now, I appreciate the civilized manner in which the issue is being addressed by this guy. I've heard of worse stories.

As far as placement goes, this was NOT a dangerous cache. Heck, on a low rated cache I can still sprain my ankle or get bitten by a rattlesnake. I also didn't get the impression that going off the trail in Rockwood was a safety hazard. There may have been signs that said that, but if we didn't see them, they weren't doing any good.

I hope this isn't the start of wholesale confiscation as a result of the publicity, or the result of zealous 'Urban Foresters'.

I read about this cache yesterday. It's hard to believe that in an area that has caves and several open quarries with trails along and through them, they would be concerned about someone getting off the path in the woods. Not knowing exactly where this cache was at, I could see his concerns if it was at the edge of one of the quarries or somewhere where you could trip and really get hurt. I would think that after the special on Ch. 2 the other night, this sport will really pickup after the holidays, and then we will be hearing more from the park rangers.

The Picnic Memorial Cache has been removed. I have setup an account to notify the Cache owners but it has not been validated as of this time.

Rockwoods Reservation is the property of the Missouri Department of Conservation and is one of the few areas where going off the trails is not allowed. There are too many places that a cross country hiker could fall into (prior to acquisition area was quarried and mined for limestone).
