Mike Nagl had never heard of geocaching until he pulled a cache container out of the Mississippi River with his crane this spring. Mike works for the St. Louis City Water Division as a heavy equipment operator and was clearing debris from the main water intake at the Chain of Rocks treatment plant a little north of the St. Louis Arch. There, nestled in a log jam and caked in mud, was a box with the word "Official" on it.

Mike managed to retrieve the box from the water and, after digging it out of the crane bucket, tried to figure out what it was. One of Mike's coworkers thought it was military and warned Mike not to open it. After cleaning off more of the mud, someone else recognized the word "Geocache." Mike recalls, "I had no idea what it was. Somebody said that geocaching was that game where people use a GPS to find stuff. I thought that sounded like a fun hobby." They opened the box, which contained perfectly dry toys and a logbook.  Here is Mike’s entry in the logbook:

I found your cache on the Mississippi River floating in a log jam.  I’m a crane operator working on the river north of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.

I was cleaning out a log jam and I noticed the box and after retrieving it I contacted “Eddie”, who informed me it had to have traveled 500 miles on water to get to me.  Amazing and very exciting.  Good luck to all.

Mike felt compelled to learn more about geocaching and tried to find out who the cache owner was.

Luckily, a sticker with the cache owner's email address was still attached to the outside of the box. Mike contacted the owner, ajayhawkfan, and let him know of his discovery. After some initial skepticism, ajayhawkfan realized that this must be one of his containers that had been originally placed in the Kansas City area.

Ajayhawkfan posted a message in the forums at the Missouri Geocachers Association website, and asked if any St. Louis cachers could contact Mike and pick up the cache:

I need help!

On July 2-4 2007 SE Kansas got 16 inches of rain flooding all the creeks and rivers. I had a cache along the Little Osage River that got washed away. Osage River Crossing Geocache
Earlier this week I received an email from a worker that found my cache. It was found along the Mississippi River a little upriver of the Arch.
That means my cache floated about 500 miles over 2 years. It went thought both Truman Res. and Dam and Lake of the Ozarks and Dam. Then down the Osage River to the Missouri and into the Mississippi.
I would like to get the cache back. The worker is holding it for me. He lives in the SW part of STL. Would someone be willing to pick it up for me?

SLAGA President, L Frank, arranged to meet Mike near his home, where he picked up the cache and listened to Mike's story. After a little research, L Frank confirmed that the cache was the final stage of ajayhawkfan's WALK THE PIPE!?!? (see cache logs, below), and that it had probably been washed away in a flood, traveling some 367 miles via the Blue River, the Missouri River and finally the Mississippi River in less than 9 months.

Ajayhawkfan's amazing "traveling cache" will soon be on its way to GeoWoodstock, where it will be handed off to another Kansas City geocacher, who will take it back to its owner. As for Mike, he hopes to buy a GPS unit and start geocaching soon. He already has a great story to tell about his first find!

This cache has floated to the Mississippi River. It has been recovered near the arch and is on its way back to me. When I get it back I will put it back.

This cache needs attention to see if stage 2 is indeed missing.

I found stage 1 with no problems (i took the low route) and searched for nearly an hour for stage 2.... It has to be missing and needs to be replaced.
