In 2006, the St. Louis Area Geocachers Association hosted its 3rd annual Midwest Open Geocaching Adventure. It was held at Pere Marquette State Park, Illinois, March 24 - 26. Although much colder than last year's event held at Meramec State Park, Missouri, everyone seems to be wearing proper attire. Those sleeping in tents in the campground survived overnight temperatures in the low 30s. Participants had two main activity choices: 1) Compete as teams or individuals to find the most punches in the shortest amount of time 2) Hunt over 60 event caches

Friday was a day for participants to travel in from other states. An early briefing was held at the main pavillion that night. During that time, the MNGCA (Minnesota Geocachers Association) presented MOGA with a 'traveling' trophy. The idea was that the 1st-place finishing team name of the 4-person competition would be engraved on it. This year, the Minnesota team added their name to it (again). All competitions and the award ceremony happened on Saturday. Individual runs were scheduled in the morning. This year, the runs were broken into age groups: Under 30, 30-49, 50 and over. Team runs were scheduled for the afternoon. A reporter from the Alton Telegraph newsletter stopped by for a quick interview. The article was published the next day in the paper. Their photographer took a few pictures of our 'waypoint-uploading' table, then had to run to bomb scare scene somewhere in a distant town. At 8pm in the main pavilion, there was a short slideshow presentation from pictures take during the past few days. Then competition awards and attendance prizes were handed out. Sunday was a day for people out of town to pack up and head home. But anyone could stay the day and keep looking for event caches. There was a Boy Scout troup from Columbia, Missouri who hunted geocaches without using a GPS receiver! They used only topo map and compass. During the event, we had a few park visitors stop by to see what was going on and left with a lot of information about geocaching. Poor Richard Sheffold (RGS) and his wife Charlotte. Their cache-mobile hit a deer Saturday morning on their way to the event on highway 3. Luckily, both were not hurt and the car was drivable. Special thanks to the tireless work of Boy Scout Troop 331 parents who prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner for many of the attendees. Mike Lusicic (Miha Ivan), SLAGA member, helped organize the cooking. They were obviously used to cooking for the masses. After the event was over, there was glowing praise for the MOGA staff. Everyone said they enjoyed the event, said they looked forward to next year's event, and were compelled to describe all the sore muscles in their body. Here is an excerpt from one of the event cache logs: "HAD AN AWESOME TIME. Really enjoyed meeting all the members of geocaching that attended. Am looking forward to meeting all the others at other events during the year, and next years MOGA!!!! Thanks to all involved in making this event a class act!!!!! My 1st and definatly not my last!!!!". (Event Coordinator) (2.2MB) 9:13 min
